Alberta government shuts down child care facility due to complaints of children being left unattended

The Government of Alberta has closed the Willowbrae Academy West Point Centre in Edmonton following numerous complaints regarding children being left unattended.

Initially, the center’s child care license was suspended due to several non-compliance issues, and a probationary license was issued with a term that expired on October 9. Although the province was working with the centre to help it return to normal operations, ongoing concerns led to the decision not to reinstate the license.

“Families affected by the closure of the program were notified in person on Oct. 9. Families not informed in person will be notified by email as soon as the contact information is provided by the child-care program. In addition, a notice confirming closure of the program, which describes the reason for closure, has been posted on the door of the facility,” said the province in a statement.

It is estimated that approximately 187 children will be affected by this closure. Families will receive support while they seek alternative child care options.
