EPCOR has announced the removal of more than 20,000 goldfish from a storm water pond in Edmonton as part of an effort to address the invasive species. The initiative began last week at the Glastonbury Stormwater Management Facility, where the company applied the chemical rotenone to selectively eliminate the fish.
According to EPCOR, a total of 770 kilograms of fish have been removed, including one notable goldfish that measured 29.3 centimeters and weighed nearly 2 pounds. The company anticipates the removal of additional fish throughout the week.
In an effort to prevent the invasive goldfish from reaching the North Saskatchewan River, EPCOR also pumped water out of the pond earlier this month. This proactive measure aims to protect local ecosystems and maintain the health of the river.
EPCOR’s actions highlight the ongoing challenges posed by invasive species and the importance of effective management strategies in urban environments.
