Housing boom in Alberta breaks records

Alberta built homes in 2024 faster than ever, leading the country in housing starts per capita. The Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon said “Alberta had a remarkable year for housing, which goes to show that our plan to build more homes faster is working.”

This boom positively affects both homebuyers and renters. Out of all the provinces, Alberta experienced the largest year-over-year decline in asking rents last year. Alberta communities also made six out of the top 10 most affordable small and mid-size rental markets in Canada.

In 2023, Alberta built 35,223 housing units. In 2024, 46,632 housing units were built. 32 per cent more than the year previous. Edmonton alone saw an increase of 39 per cent last year compared to 2023. 24’ saw 18,384 homes, whereas 23’ saw only 13,184.
