Fort Saskatchewan’s new near-market housing apartment building is hosting a belated grand opening next week.
On Tuesday (Oct 17) at 10 a.m. the Heartland Housing Foundation will be hosting the grand opening at 9410 94 Avenue.
The event will feature remarks from Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon and others who helped fund the project.
The apartments were approximately 20 per cent below market pricing and are at net-zero levels through the use of solar power and other green features. At the moment, there is no vacancy.
The building was named after Fort Saskatchewan’s former mayor and member of the Alberta Legislative Assembly. She was mayor from 1980 to 1986 and the first mayor after Fort Saskatchewan was incorporated into a city. She resigned halfway through her second turn to contest the 1986 Alberta election.
This was the first near-market housing apartment introduced to Fort Saskatchewan, which had been in the works since the city acknowledged the need for affordable housing back in 2010. Applications were being accepted for the apartment by October 2022.
Although the apartments have been open for almost a year, the Ministry of Seniors, Community & Social Services made a request for a grand opening ceremony.
