Former Sherwood Park Crusader makes NHL debut

Former Sherwood Park Crusader goaltender Matt Tomkins made his NHL debut over the weekend.

On Sunday Tomkins made his debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning in a game against the Ottawa Senators. The Lightning lost the game 5-2.

Tomkins had played two seasons for the Crusaders between 2011 and 2013 before going on to play with Ohio State University.

Back in 2012, Tomkins was even selected in the draft 199th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks.

On May 10, Tomkins was signed as a free agent on a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tomkins also played with Indy Fuel in the ECHL, the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL, and he even played a few seasons with the Swedish Hockey League.

In 2022, Tomkins even got to play on the international stage as goaltender for Team Canada in the 2022 Winter Olympics.
