Edmonton Public Teachers’ Association Local 37 have authorized the Alberta Teachers’ Association to call a government-supervised strike vote.
In a news release, Heather Quinn, president of local 37 said Edmonton public teachers fell undervalued, leading membership to vote 97 per cent in favour of authorizing this preliminary move. This come after teachers voted 91 per cent in favour of to reject a third-party mediators offer on Sunday night.
The mediator’s proposal “didn’t offer enough improvement for teachers working in online learning or for those teaching summer school and night school. The position of the school division to treat different types of teacher work as less valuable than others is seen by teachers as being quite disrespectful,” Quinn said.
In spite of authorizing the ATA to call a strike vote, Local 37 remains hopeful for a negotiated settlement.
