Brian Mulroney, former prime minister, dead at 84

Former prime minister Brian Mulroney has passed away, according to his daughter.

His daughter made the post on X Thursday evening, mentioning that he had passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.

Just a few weeks before his 85th birthday, Mulroney had dealt with health problems throughout his life, from years of being a heavy smoker, to being treated for prostate cancer just last year.

Mulroney was born in Quebec and studied politics and law before becoming a politician, where he eventually became prime minister between 1984 and 1993.

He served under the Progressive Conservative Party, being in power during the same time as Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan.

Mulroney is also known for his negotations which would lead to the North American Free Trade Agreement.
