Sherwood park school hosts students and staff hockey fundraiser

Students and staff at St. Theresa Catholic School in Sherwood Park hosted a hockey fundraiser for a good cause.

On Friday, the fundraiser was held at the Sherwood Park Arena, and featured three periods, with a shoot out competition and a chuck-a-puck competition between them.

“Students throw their puck closest to the center of the ice, and the one whose puck is closest to the centre wins a pizza party for their class,” said Samantha Gartner, a Grade 8 teacher at the school.

All proceeds from the event went towards Catholic Social Services’ Lurana Shelter, a first-stage shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence, and KidsSport Edmonton, which helps support sports registration fees for youth.

“It is important to show students that there are different ways to be involved in giving to charity. It is also important for the school to have a fun break in the school year to come together in a fun way to support important causes,” wrote Gartner.

The premise of this game is to build school spirit in a fun and active way. St. Theresa got the idea for the charity game after seeing a similar fundraiser at Archbishop Jordan Catholic High School.

The event has been going for seven years now, with the exception of a few years that were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
