MIX 107.9 makes it to space

MIX 107.9 had a surprise visitor on Thursday.

Dennis Stelmach of the Grow Your Own Project presented MIX 107.9 with a plaque for supporting the project and the Harvest Festival.

During last year’s festival the project launched a weather balloon into the stratosphere, adorned with logos of several local organizations. Alongside MIX 107.9 was Twice But Nice, CO-OP, and the City of Fort Saskatchewan.

“Last year’s balloon went a fantastic 109,000 feet above Earth and enabled us to capture some stunning pictures,” wrote the Grow Your Own Project in a letter given to MIX 107.9.

The Grow Your Own Project is dedicated towards teaching youth how to grow and harvest vegetables before donating them to local food banks throughout the area.

“Last year we produced over 8,268 lbs. of vegetables for the local food banks: Fort Saskatchewan, Gibbons, and Redwater.”

With 2024 being the 10th anniversary of the project, they’ll be looking to make this event the biggest one yet, with another weather balloon launch planned for this August.
