The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) have announced the return of their Cadet program.
The program had shut down four years ago due to a temporary suspension but has now returned with a brand-new curriculum that brings a more hands-on approach to learning.
“When we paused the program, a lot of people were disappointed, which speaks volumes to how much it’s valued by our members and the public,” said Constable Amy Humphreys, youth program coordinator. “There is a lot of excitement for the return of the program from EPS members, former Cadets and their families, community members and the like. We are thrilled to be offering it again.”
The Cadet Corps program is aimed towards youth aged 14-18 who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. The program is designed to challenge students both mentally and physically while building character and teaching students to work as a team.
Past students in the program have gone on to become EPS officers themselves, with others going into other positive role model roles in the community.
The program began in the 50s as part of Scouts Canada, becoming a police run program in 1990. Finally, the program continued until 2019 where it paused for restructuring.
Applications for this year’s program are open until May 31, with the applications page available on the EPS website.
