A Sherwood Park man is going to prison for the deaths of an Edmonton couple.
Taylor Yaremchuk, 30, pleaded guilty to two counts of impaired driving causing death after his car struck the motorcycle carrying Jim and Annie Macdonald.
Justice Shaina Leonard agreed with the Crown’s recommendation of a five year sentence, stating, “A strong message must be sent to denounce and deter such conduct.” The defence had requested a 3 to 5 year sentence.
In addition to the prison term, Justice Leonard also banned Yaremchuk from driving for seven years.
At the time of the crash, Yaremchuk’s blood alcohol was more than twice the legal limit. Yaremchuk had a history of speeding and distracted driving infractions leading to license suspensions. These were aggravating factors in determining an appropriate sentence.
