Armed man shot, killed by police in suspected suicide

An armed man was shot and killed by police outside the Leduc RCMP detachment late Wednesday evening.

RCMP received a report of a suicidal man with a firearm after 11pm on June 19.  Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team, nearby detachments, Edmonton Police Service Air 1 Helicopter and EPS Tactical Team and EPS Police Dog Service all assisted in searching for the man.  Attempts were made to de-escalate the situation, but a confrontation occurred between the suspect and EPS officers resulting in at least one EPS officer discharging a firearm.

The suspect was injured and subsequently died as a result of his injuries.  No officers or members of the public were injured during this incident.

The Director of Law Enforcement was notified immediately, causing the deployment of ASIRT to conduct an independent investigation as required in all officer-involved shootings.
