Microsoft outage disrupts flights, media and hospitals

On Friday morning, a widespread technology outage severely disrupted critical services across Canada, impacting flights, hospitals, and media operations. Cybersecurity experts at CrowdStrike identified a faulty update targeting computers running Microsoft Windows as the root cause. Fortunately, systems using Mac and Linux were unaffected by the issue.

The fallout was extensive: 21 outbound flights were grounded, Canadian press services experienced interruptions, and global news outlets were forced offline for several hours. Banks also encountered disruptions to their payment systems on both websites and apps.

Responding swiftly, Microsoft 360 took to social media, reassuring the public that they are actively rerouting affected traffic to alternative systems in order to minimize the impact. They have since reported progress in restoring services to normal levels.
