Canada Post negotiation updates: Canada Post issues lock out notice and CUPW issues 72 strike notice

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has issued a 72-hour strike notice to Canada Post, covering both its urban and rural-suburban bargaining units. This means the union could legally strike as of Friday if the settlement is not reached.

Early this morning, CUPW announced the notice, pushing for an improved agreement after rejecting Canada Post’s recent contract offer. The offer included an 11.5 per cent wage increase over four years, along with protections for defined benefit pensions for current employees, job security, and health benefits.

Despite these provisions, CUPW has deemed the proposal insufficient and will continue negotiating with Canada Post.

In the event of a strike, both sides have agreed to continue delivering socio-economic cheques to ensure Canadians reliant on government financial assistance are not impacted.

Lock out

Later in the day on Tuesday, Canada post issued a lock out as of 8 a.m, Friday if the negotiations still are not reached for the Urban Postal Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) bargaining units..
