Nearly five months after a shooting that left one man seriously injured in the quiet hamlet of South Cooking Lake, RCMP have laid multiple charges against a suspect in what they describe as a targeted, violent incident.
On November 13, 2024, Strathcona County RCMP responded to reports of gunfire at a private residence just after 10 a.m. Officers arrived to find a 43-year-old man suffering from serious injuries, a 38-year-old man with minor wounds, and a 37-year-old woman who was physically unharmed. The most seriously injured man was transported to hospital by ground ambulance and has since been released.
In the days that followed, RCMP launched a coordinated search for the assailant, enlisting specialized units including the General Investigation Section (GIS), the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU), and Police Dog Services. Despite an extensive search, no suspects were apprehended at the time.
After months of investigation, on April 2, 2025, Strathcona County RCMP arrested 38-year-old Jebediah Thomas Caswell, described as having no fixed address. Caswell now faces five serious charges: break and enter with intent to commit aggravated assault, robbery, discharging a firearm with intent, possession of a prohibited firearm, and forcible confinement.
Caswell was remanded into custody following a judicial hearing and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Sherwood Park on April 16.
