EIPS, EPS teacher arrested on child exploitation, pornography charges

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit has arrested and charged an Edmonton-area teacher on child exploitation and child pornography charges.

The team was tipped off by a national child safety service which had received a tip that Eric Matheson-Jones had allegedly uploaded child pornography via Dropbox, an online file sharing app.

After a search of his home, Matheson-Jones was charged with accessing, possessing, and transmitting child pornography.

At the time of his arrest, he was a casual teacher at Norquest College, and a substitute teacher for both Edmonton Public Schools and Elk Island Public Schools teacher middle- and high-school students. Investigators have said that there is no indication that his students were harmed.

Elk Island Public Schools and Norquest College have both terminated Matheson-Jones’s employment. Edmonton Public Schools previously employed him, but a spokesperson said that he is no longer with the division.

Matheson-Jones was released from custody with some court-imposed conditions. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 4.
