Once Upon a Child is hosting their annual “Thrifting for a Cause” cancer fundraiser today from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m..
“Cancer is something that’s touched everyone,” said store owner Amanda Haun. “Not one person hasn’t been touched by cancer in some way in their life.”
Haun lost her mother to cancer 5 years ago, shortly after she had become a mother herself.
“Once Upon a Child was a dream that never happened when she was alive and it’s something that would’ve been close to her heart… so it’s one way that I can keep her legacy [alive].”
Any profits made from anything purchased at the store go directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, as well as some raffles that are sponsored by other businesses around Strathcona County. Attendees can also make direct donations to the Alberta Cancer Foundation at the event, with any donation greater than $25 getting a tax receipt.
“…places like Alberta Cancer Foundation, they help a lot with a lot of resources for people who are either surviving with, living with, or terminal with cancer,” said Haun.
The raffles include a $25 dollar gift card to Plato’s Closet in Sherwood Park, as well as some other gift cards for businesses around the Sherwood Park area.
Once Upon a Child has also donated a gift card and some goodies for the raffle basket.
This is the third year that Amanda Haun and Once Upon a Child have hosted the “Thrifting for a Cause” fundraiser.
Once Upon a Child is an international organization that aims to support parents by allowing them to sell old children’s clothing to the shop in exchange for cash. Those items are then put up for sale in the store at a discounted rate than if you were to buy them new from a clothing store.
This is a great way to help parents with the cost of buying new clothing whenever their child grows a size by allowing them to sell their old clothes that they have no need for, as well as getting some new outfits for their children.
Once Upon a Child is located at 201 Kaska Road, Sherwood Park.
