St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron has announced that she has no plans to seek another term in office.
She told a crowd of about 200 people at June 11’s State of the City that her decision to step away from municipal politics after a 15-year career came after “much soul-searching and struggle.”
She didn’t fully rule out a return though, stating that if the opportunity presents itself, she might run for councilor.
As of right now, two candidates have put their names forward to take over Heron’s role as mayor.
Scott Olivieri, the board chair for the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation, put his name in the hat for the mayorship in February.
Current St. Albert councilor Wes Brodhead is also running for mayor later this year. He was elected as a councilor alongside Cathy Heron in 2010.
Mayor Heron has led the city since 2017, including throughout the entire COVID-19 pandemic.
