The Alberta United Conservative Party laid out their governing vision for the 31st legislative assembly.
Alberta Lieutenant-Governor Salma Lakhani read the throne speech, which was absent of any mention of an exit from the Canada Pension Plan.
As promised ahead of the May 29th election of Premier Danielle Smith’s UCP, the party will get to work by immediately ensuring future tax hikes are put before Albertan voters.
“For obvious reasons, Alberta’s government can do little about the federal carbon tax or federal sales tax,” Salma said.
“But it can and will do its part to lower the tax burden for Albertans.
“That is why Alberta’s Government will introduce Bill One: The Taxpayer Protection Amendment Act to guarantee there will be no new taxes or increases in personal or business taxes in this province without approval by Albertans in a referendum.
“In addition, Alberta’s government will lower the tax burden for Albertans by creating a new 8% tax bracket on income under $60,000, saving Alberta taxpayers up to $750.” Salma said.
The throne speech also promised to extend a fuel tax break until the end of the year, and to reform the province’s electricity market.
