The Alberta Made Screen Industries Program will be supporting over 150 local film and television projects through $2.8 million in grants.
The film industry in Alberta has been steadily growing, especially as the first season of The Last of Us, which was filmed in Alberta, is considered the largest production ever filmed in Canada.
Since 2020, the province spent $6.8 million on local projects, generating $26.7 million across the province.
“Alberta’s government is committed to supporting filmmakers and productions of all sizes, ensuring there are opportunities for Albertans to showcase their talents and contribute to our vibrant film scene,” said Matt Jones, minister of jobs, economy, and trade. “Along with the Film and Television Tax Credit, which supports larger productions, the Alberta Made Screen Industries Program is a vital investment in our province’s creative ecosystem.”
The grant money is designed to help develop the industry across the province, whether the production is big or small.
In the July 2023 intake of the Alberta Made Production Grant, 20 productions received a total of $1.3 million, which will be generating $4.8 million for the Alberta economy, while also creating over 60 jobs.
According to the provincial government, for every dollar the government spends towards a production, the industry generates four dollars back.
