Fort Saskatchewan RCMP warning public of ‘Emergency Scam’

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP have noticed a rise of “Emergency Scams” reported to the detachment this month.

These scams, also called “Grandparent” scams, involve a phone call where the scammer claims a loved one of the victim is either injured or in trouble with the law, with a payment needed to help them.

The suspect will often pretend to be a figure of authority, such as a judge or police officer. Usually the scammers ask for cash, but they may also ask for gift cards, e-transfers, or even bitcoin.

Sometimes the scammer has even been known to send an associate to pick up the money in person.

Police are reminding the public to use the following tips to recognize scams and avoid being a victim:

  • Often, scammers will create a sense of urgency to cloud your judgement. Don’t be afraid to say no.
  • If a person claims to be a police officer, call that police service to confirm the situation.
  • If someone claims to be a family member, confirm who they are through somebody else you trust.
  • Scammers will pressure you to lie to your bank, family, or the police. Reach out for help.
  • Never give out personal information over the phone.

Police are asking that if you fall victim to one of these scams, please call Fort Saskatchewan RCMP at 780-997-7900.
