St. Albert City Council is going forward with their plans to bring public transit in-house. However, before they make the transition, they need to review the costs.
Council has told city administration to hire someone to complete an analysis and bring forward a plan for the transit transition with a budget of $100,000.
Right now, St. Albert outsources their transit to PW Transit, who came with a cost of $8.6 million in 2023. According to Alberta Federation of Labour president Gil McGowen, this changing to in-house operations could save the St. Albert at least $1 million every year.
The motion for this analysis was put forward by councilor Sheena Hughes, with only two votes opposing, from mayor Cathy Heron and councilor Natalie Joly.
City administration has until March 2025 to complete the analysis and implementation plan before presenting them to council.
