A historic hangar in Edmonton was destroyed by a large fire on Monday afternoon.
The fire was at Hangar 11, located between the Blatchford neighbourhood and the NAIT campus, with the blaze starting just before 7 p.m.
The fire prompted a second-alarm response from Edmonton firefighters, with 11 crews working on the fire at its peak.
According to Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, the fire had already engulfed the interior of the hangar by the time they arrived. The LRT at the NAIT/Blatchford Market station was temporarily closed as crews continued to fight the blaze into the evening.
By the time the sun went down, the building had been fully engulfed and destroyed in the fire. Crews continued to monitor the fire into Monday night.
The cause of the blaze and the cost of damages is not known at this time, but firefighters have confirmed that no injuries were reported.
Hangar 11 was originally constructed during World War II by the U.S. Air Force, with it being the busiest airfield in the world at one point, bringing in 900 flights every day.
Hangar 11 was the last building of its kind in Western Canada, with the airport closing in 2013 after being in operation for over 80 years.
