Amit Mali, former principal of Sherwood Heights Junior High, has been charged with sexual assault.
The investigation began back in February after police received reports of the alleged sexual assault. Police began investigating where they determined that the victim was an adult woman.
In early May police arrested and charged Mali with three counts of sexual assault and one count of criminal harassment.
“We understand that this news may be distressing for members of our community. For some, it may evoke painful memories of past experiences. If you have been a victim of sexual assault, we urge you to seek support,” wrote the RCMP in a release.
Mali was released under a series of conditions and will be appearing in a Sherwood Park court on May 29.
A statement from Elk Island Public Schools, the district that runs Sherwood Heights, states that Mali was placed on leave and is no longer employed by the district following the complaints.
