Alexander Doduk, an Edmonton police officer, will not be facing charges in the 2021 death of Steven Nguyen.
A weapons complaint had been called on Nugyen as someone reported that he was walking around with what they thought was a knife, ice pick, or screwdriver.
When officers arrived at the scene, they saw that Nugyen had a long blue handle sticking out of his pockets.
Nguyen went to reach into his pockets, pulling out a cell phone. As he pulled the phone out, Doduk shot at Nguyen seven times, with four shots hitting him.
According to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), there were only 30 seconds between the officers confronting Nguyen, and Nguyen being shot.
Officers found a cell phone and a barbecue lighter on Nguyen, with no weapon being found.
Despite ASIRT finding issues with Doduk’s account of events, and even determining that an offense had been committed, Edmonton police have decided not to charge Doduk in Nguyen’s death.
Instead, Doduk has been placed on leave with pay, although EPS says that it was unrelated to the ASIRT investigation.
This isn’t the first time that Doduk has been accused of misconduct. Back in 2019, Doduk was accused of assault after breaking a man’s nose during an arrest.
Doduk was charged with assault in relation to the incident in 2023. He has a court date set for August of this year.
