WestJet strike averted, negotiations to resume

WestJet says it’s trying to get its networks back to normal after cancelling nearly 50 flights because of a potential strike by its mechanics.

That threat has now been called off after both sides agreed to return to the bargaining table to try to find a deal.

Union members voted overwhelmingly to reject a tentative deal last week and voiced opposition to the airline’s request for arbitration.

An overnight statement from the airline says the Canadian Industrial Relations Board needs more time to decide whether arbitration is the best way to reach an agreement.
