Canada Soccer has reached a preliminary agreement with its men’s and women’s national teams for a new labor contract that would cover the period from June 2024 to December 2027. The framework of the agreement seeks to enhance financial conditions and ensure fairness between the two teams.
However, the finalization of this deal is contingent upon renegotiating the existing agreement with Canadian Soccer Business (CSB), which manages marketing and broadcast rights. Currently, Canada Soccer receives approximately $4 million annually from CSB, but a revised deal is needed to secure the new labor agreement. Both national teams have made concessions to facilitate this process.
Complicating matters, the women’s team has filed a $40-million lawsuit against former board members, alleging negligence and breach of fiduciary duty related to the CSB contract.
Despite these ongoing legal challenges, there remains cautious optimism that the issues will be resolved and a final agreement will be reached.
