Fort Saskatchewan Furniture Bank supports families in the community with essential furniture

The Fort Saskatchewan Furniture Bank helps individuals and families in need by providing basic furniture and household items. The non-profit focuses on those transitioning out of homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, recovering from disasters, or newcomers to Canada.

By offering items like beds, sofas, and kitchen essentials, the organization aims to give people a stable and comfortable home, regardless of their situation. Leaders say this service helps improve quality of life and supports people in rebuilding their lives and integrating into the community.

“A stable home is key to building a better future,” said a spokesperson for the furniture bank.

Services offered

The furniture bank provides gently used furniture and household goods, working closely with clients to meet their needs. The organization also offers delivery for those who can’t transport items themselves.

“We give everything from beds to kitchen basics, making sure clients can create a safe and comfortable space,” the spokesperson said.

They work with other local groups like Families First Society and Victims Services to connect clients with additional support when needed.

Impact on clients

The furniture bank says its work goes beyond just providing furniture—it helps people regain stability and dignity, especially those recovering from poverty, domestic violence, or homelessness.

In 2023, the organization helped 153 people, with 75 per cent being newcomers to Canada. Another 20 per cent were fleeing domestic violence, and five per cent were low-income seniors or individuals transitioning out of homelessness.

Financial difficulties

Despite its impact, the Fort Saskatchewan Furniture Bank is facing financial challenges. With an annual budget of $16,000, it depends on donations to cover rent, insurance, and utilities. Without more support, the organization risks closing.

“We could be forced to shut down without more funding,” the spokesperson said.

How to help

The community can support by volunteering or donating. Volunteers are needed to pick up and deliver furniture. Donations can be made online at fortsaskfurniturebank.com.
