Alberta releases report on 2023 election

The provincial government has released a report showing statistics from the 2023 Provincial General Election.

The report was released by the Chief electoral officer and shows that the May 29 election day say a total of 1,777,315 voters in the election. This is a voter turnout of just over 60 per cent.

This turnout came despite wildfires going off throughout the province, which brought in advance voting and increased special ballot access. As thousands of electors were impacted through the wildfire season, this led to 47 per cent of electors using an alternate voting method.

“My appreciation goes out to the over 13,000 Albertans who worked tirelessly in these very challenging circumstances, to provide timely and efficient information and voting services to voters,” said Chief Electoral Officer, Glen Resler.

In total there were 757,453 ballots cast in advance, with 24,282 cast during mobile voting, and 51,351 people voted by special ballot.

The report also includes recommendations for legislative change, including encouraging voter participation, and bringing more flexibility to elections.

The 2023 election had a total cost of $36,749,588, with the enumeration costing $2,378,959, which would cost just under $10 for participating households.
