Sherwood Park man allegedly starts fire as police execute search warrant

Strathcona County RCMP have arrested a man on outstanding warrants last week.

On March 13 police attended a residence near Range Road 223 and Township Road 512 in Sherwood Park to arrest the wanted man.

The situation was deemed high risk by authorities, who had the RCMP Emergency Response Team attend the scene. As police were at the property, a fire broke out in a shop.

Shortly after the fire began, the wanted man surrendered to police before being taken to hospital for minor injuries.

James Venoit, a 53-year-old man from Sherwood Park, is now facing two counts of arson on top of his 12 outstanding warrants.

Venoit was placed in custody leading up to his court date.
